Penn State Extension Offers Specialty Crop Tour for Young Growers

The tour will take place Thursday, November 21

Young specialty crop growers are invited to attend an educational tour of three Adams County horticultural enterprises that have successfully diversified their business and product line. The tour will take place Thursday, November 21, 2019 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Twin Springs Fruit Farm followed by a visit to the Thirsty Farmer Brew Works and the Historic Round Barn and Farm Market.

The tour was planned by leaders of the Penn State Extension Young Grower Alliance (YGA), https://agsci.psu.edu/research/extension-centers/frec/yga, which is a network for connecting professionals working in the specialty crop industry. Young growers will also lead the tours at each location. Twin Springs Fruit Farm (www.twinspringsfruitfarm.com) began direct marketing fruit at farmers markets in the Washington DC and Northern Virginia area in the 1980s. Today they grow an assortment of tree fruit, small fruit, and vegetable crops, including fresh greens from their expanding greenhouse complex. Sam Childs will lead the tour of the greenhouse complex, biomass converter and new cold storage facility. The Thirsty Farmer Brew Works (https://thirstyfarmer.com) features build-your-own sandwiches and wraps, small plates and sides, and a wide selection of beers and ciders using hops and apples grown on site. Kevin Knouse will talk about the brewery and hopyard. Lunch is provided courtesy of the YGA. Built in 1914, the Round Barn (https://roundbarn.farm) is the only surviving example of its kind in Pennsylvania. The market inside features a broad selection of fruit and vegetables grown on over 1200 acres of surrounding farmland managed by the Knouse family, as well as baked goods, gifts and seasonal decorations. Kevin Knouse will also lead this tour of the barn and market, events hall and petting zoo.
